From Full-Time Mom to Tech-Moms Placement Coordinator: Sarah's Journey Back to the Workforce

Meet Sarah, a Tech-Moms graduate whose journey is a testament to the power of resilience and community. After spending two decades as a full-time mom, Sarah faced the daunting challenge of re-entering the workforce. With outdated skills and no professional network, she turned to Tech-Moms for support. What she found was more than just technical skills—it was the confidence, community, and resources she needed to reinvent her career and build a brighter future for herself and her family. Read her inspiring story below.

As a young woman, I felt that all opportunities were open to me. I joined the United States Air Force and loved wearing the uniform and serving my country. When my first child came along, however, I decided it was time to switch gears. For the next two decades, I poured my heart and soul into being a full-time mom to my seven children.

My days were filled with all the beautiful chaos that comes with raising a family—first steps, bedtime stories, sibling fights, first lost teeth, dance classes, new drivers licenses, and everything in between. But life has a way of shifting, and a few years ago, a series of medical challenges my husband faced made it clear that I needed to re-enter the workforce. It was a daunting realization: not only had I been out of the job market for 20 years, but I didn’t even know where to start. I didn’t have up-to-date skills, a resume, a professional network, or even someone who could write me a recommendation.

The thought of stepping into a job search felt overwhelming, but I couldn’t let fear hold me back. My family depended on me, and I was determined to rise to the challenge. That’s when I heard about an upcoming Tech-Moms cohort and decided to apply. The idea of a program designed to help women like me, who might be starting over or entering an entirely new field, felt like a lifeline. I enrolled in the class, and from the moment I stepped into the program, everything changed.

Tech-Moms didn’t just teach me skills—it gave me confidence. I loved being in a classroom surrounded by other women. I was encouraged by the support of teachers, classmates, Tech-Moms staff, and of the many women who volunteered their time to come to our class as guest speakers and share their own journeys into and through various tech fields.

"Today, I am proud to say that I work for Tech-Moms as Placement Coordinator, a job that gives me the opportunity to focus on helping other women find improved employment and create brighter futures for themselves and their families."

I have also made time to continue my own education; my Tech-Moms experience gave me the confidence to look beyond areas I had experience in and try new things. A few months after graduating from my Tech-Moms cohort I was able to apply for and receive a scholarship through an organization called Women in Cybersecurity that has allowed me to further my education in a field I have come to love and hope to work in soon. Tech-Moms gave me a path forward. It has given me a bridge back into the workforce after a long hiatus, has provided the support I needed to cross that bridge, and has given me a network of incredible women who inspire me every day with their stories, their strength through challenges, and their successes.
